A ceasefire is born
After passionate debates during moderated and unmoderated caucus, after many secret handwritten notes passed across tables, after solving the issue of realistic behaviour, a ceasefire is born in the Yemeni peace talks committee.
It is difficult to say, how strongly this agreement was influenced by this one message, delivered via express courier across the room. One delegate took the effort to actually get up, leaving the chair during moderated caucus, to deliver this important message. But for sure, thanks to the effort of all delegates in this lively committee during the last few days, the difficult task to negotiate an accepted ceasefire agreement was realised!
On Saturday afternoon, the 23rd November 2019, Al-Houthis and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia came to an accepted an immediately effective 15 days lasting ceasefire agreement. It contains three main topics, first a 20 km demilitarized zone, of which 5 km are based on the Saudi border, secondly the removal of the blockage on Hodeidah for humanitarian aid purpose and lastly the vow of the Houthis to cut all military, commercial, and economic ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
