What is a Position Paper?

A Position Paper is a short formal document where a delegate explains the stance of the country being represented, according to the topic and the committee assigned. Thus, it is crucial that the information and data included are accurate and well sourced. You should show the chairs that you fully understand the topic and that the measures you propose are coherent and realistic. It should represent the viewpoints of the country you are representing, separate from your own opinions. A good position paper will help you navigate IsarMUN smoothly, laying the ground for successful negotiations as well as informed and quick decision-making.

A good position paper delves into the following aspects:

Background: Provide a succinct overview of the historical context and current challenges related to the agenda items. Clearly identify the major concerns that your country believes should be prioritized, drawing from accurate and up-to-date sources to establish a solid foundation.

Position: Articulate your country’s stance on the agenda items with precision, outlining perspectives, priorities, and red lines. Differentiate personal opinions from the official standpoint, showcasing a deep grasp of your nation’s diplomatic priorities.

Solutions & Strategy: Go beyond stating your position by proposing measures and strategies to address the identified challenges. Outline specific actions, policies, or initiatives and provide an overview of a strategic roadmap for the committee, indicating steps your country believes are necessary for a comprehensive and sustainable solution.
